Sustainable energy

Sustainable energy sources such as sun, wind and geothermal energy do not cause air pollution and low CO2 emissions. Another advantage is that this energy never runs out. Sustainable energy is in contrast to coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels contributes actively to climate change.

Sustainable energy is energy that is consumed at insignificant rates compared to its supply and with manageable collateral effects, especially environmental effects. Another common definition of sustainable energy is an energy system that serves the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.[1] Renewable energy is not a synonym of sustainable energy. While renewable energy is defined as one that is naturally replenished on a human timescale, sustainable (often referred to as ‘clean’) energy is one the use of which will not compromise the system in which it is adopted to the point of not being fit to provide needs in the future

Wind energy

Wind farms can provide Portugal with an important part of clean, inexhaustible energy. The production of a wind turbine costs energy, but the efficiency is much higher than at a coal or nuclear power plant.

Biomass

Biomass is a renewable fuel, but is under discussion. This has to do with origin of the raw materials and the way of processing (incineration, gasification or fermentation).

Hydropower

In Portugal we generate little hydro power. Only a few percent of all green electricity. Did you know that power can also be generated at the coast?

Replace fossil fuel with Sustainable Power

Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels. They cause pollution and – when burned – a lot of CO2 emissions. In addition, their stock is finite. That is why we try to replace them as much as possible with sustainable energy sources and energy saving.
