In Portugal, the generation of electricity from renewable power sources is mainly promoted through a feed-in tariff. Currently, the FiT regime continues to apply only to existing installations. A new system for Small Production Units (UPP) and Self-consumption Units (UPAC) has been introduced in 2014. It replaces previously applicable to micro and mini-generation units.

In 2015 a different regime for Small Production (UPP) and Self-consumption Units (UPAC) came into force. There are common regulations and certain particularities for UPACs and UPPs. UPPs can have an installed capacity of up to 250 kW, whereas UPACs can have an installed capacity between 200 W and more than 1 MW.

    These photovoltaic systems are useful for people with a small home and constant consumption ( mobilidade elétrica ). The system may not exceed 1500 watts, and you consume what you produce.     The maximum power in watts is related to the contract you have with your supplier. You will consume your own produced energy. The surplus of electricity will go into the grid. The compensation for the injected electricity power is 100% minus 10%, of the energy Iberian market price.
    The estimation in 2018 is about 4 cents to 5 cents  the Kilowatt Hour.
  3. UPP, all sold to the grid.
    These photovoltaic systems feed all the power to the network ( rede de distribuição ). The estimated duty is about 10-11 cents per kWh. These systems are as well interesting when people have a less stable consumption. But are also related to the contract you have with your energy supplier, for example, the EDP commercial.

UPPs and UPACs being connected to the grid require a prior registration on SERUP (Electronic Registration System). Then, SERUP issues a receipt (including a registration number as well as the data and time of the registration) to proceed with the payment of a registration fee. In short you have three options: ( Informações sobre as três opções. )

  1. A Photovoltaic system, not more then 1500W. You use al the energy your self. Whats left go's to-the grid, but you get no Money for it. No one time fee!
  2. Photovoltaic system, more then 1500W with a feed-in tariff. The energy that you are not using goes into the electricity network. If you have a lithium backup storage, it wil load the battery. The price for electricity out a home battery is around 10.4 cents. Estimated return value in 2018 is about 4 to 5 cents the kWh. You need-to pay a one time Fee for registration.
  3. Likewise, a green power system of which all electricity goes into the national network. So without self consumption. Estimated payment for this energy in 2018 is about 10 to 11 cents. A fee has to-be paid.

The amount of energy you can generate is equal to the contract that you have concluded with the supplier. If you have signed a contract of 3.45 kVA, you may not produce more energy with your PV system than 3.45 kVA (approximately 2.76 kW). The solution is to have energy storage system.

To convert the number of kVA from your contract to the number of kW that you can produce with your panels is fairly easy. Likewise, multiply the number of kVA by 0.8. The result is then the amount of kW.

It will be clear that the smallest user option one is the most attractive. For the other users, option two will be the most beautiful. A system that produces on average equal to the consumption.

How much CO2 emissions do green panels accurately compensate?
For example, PV collectors are the equivalent for non CO2 emissions. It is sometimes said that one photovoltaic panel generates energy with the equivalent of a specific value of CO2 emissions. Companies also dare to show this when they place a large park of pv panels at their branches. Those PV collectors then correspond to a certain amount of CO2 that the company would have emitted if they had not installed photovoltaic cells.

Therefore, we can assume that 1 square meter of solar panel compensates for emissions of approximately 685 kg of CO 2 during its lifetime. 685 kilos of CO 2 corresponds to a car travelling 4,600 km. So this is entirely worth the effort. You can also imagine how much a company that places a large park on solar panels saves on CO2 emissions.
