Vehicle to grid - How does v2g work

The Vehicle to grid and how does v2g work, as an concept is developed in Japan. To be able to use the electric car as an emergency generator in the event of power outages. Vehicle to grid technology allows electric vehicles owners not only to be able to purchase energy from the national electricity grid.

However, also to supply power to the electricity grid. Moreover, it becomes possible to send the electricity supply to other electric cars.

V2G technology makes it possible for the battery of an electric vehicle to function (temporarily) as a buffer capacity. Use the buffer capacity to send electricity, to other vehicles to recharge. Or use it to store a surplus of renewable energy.

More power generated than requested? Delivering it back to the grid or use it at home. For more information you can contact me, or look at this website about V2G.

The owner of this website has years of experience with PV panels, and recently also with V2G. He owns an electric car from Nissan, the Leaf.  And is totally researching and manages all the information about the use of your electric car as a battery pack for home.

The application of V2G technology also makes it possible to develop new business models for the use of electric vehicles. And to improve the affordability of electric transport. One can think of energy subscriptions in which also delivery to the network is included. A price advantage for the user is then possible.

In Japan they have known it for a long time, the electric car is capable of more than just transport. The situated is a geologically unstable area. Earth and seaquakes are not uncommon. There are also regular hurricanes. The Japanese are therefore often without power.

Car manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors decided, to make their electric cars suitable as an emergency generator.

The electric vehicle, it's nothing more than a battery on wheels. Can be used as power delivery supply in addition to EV charging. Giving electricity back to a house or building if needed. Thus the fundamental principle of Vehicle to Grid (V2G) was born.

In Portugal earthquakes and hurricanes are not at issue. However, we often have to deal with a power outage. The concept of Vehicle to Grid, the use the electric car as a buffer, is therefore in the Algarve very promising.

Simply as an emergency generator. But also as a way to save sustainable energy. That is where a more significant need will arise. Among other things, to say goodbye to fossil fuels such as coal and gas.

Although the technology behind smart charging is already in full use. This does not apply to the technology behind Vehicle to Grid, bi-directional loading. The bi-directional charging station is also not yet available on a large scale. There is much interest in the subject.

It goes beyond a pole that can load in two directions. Not only different techniques, charging station, smart meter and electricity grid have to be physically connected. They also need to be able to 'talk' to each other via different virtual platforms, and in the same 'language'. For example, for smart charging, you have the Open Smart Charging Protocol (OSCP).

There are not enough protocols for the Vehicle to Grid concept. The various sources, the car, the smart meter and the charging station, are not yet sufficiently coordinated.

The main problem is to communicate with each other. Adding intelligence to the system, making 'smart' and predicting bi-directional loading is, among other things, indeed a challenge in practice.

In Portugal, and in other places in the world, we are working hard on the development of so-called smart charging. Smart techniques that make it possible to charge an electric car at the most favourable moments.

For example, if there is an abundance of sustainable electricity, such as wind power or solar energy. In that case, you not only pay a lower price but you also help to keep the electricity network in balance. We prevent the EV from becoming a burden instead of a blessing.

The fast-growing number of EVs also means a fast-growing demand for electricity. Especially at specific times of the day, such as in the evening, when people come home from work and mount their car.

For smart vehicle charging, you do not have to go two ways, bi-directionally to load. We are talking about intelligent mono directional charging, faster or slower charging and being able to play with it. That is so different from Vehicle to Grid. The similarity between both is that you add intelligence and smartness to loading.

Vehicle to Grid is a collective name for various applications, where batterys of the electric car is used as a flow buffer. So you have Vehicle to Home, Vehicle to Office and the actual Vehicle to Grid. Every application has its value proposition.

  • VEHICLE TO HOME (V2H). Is a closed microsystem for private use. You can use the electric car as a battery for your home. Temporarily store the surplus of self-generated solar energy. And use it again, when the sun is not shining.
  • VEHICLE TO OFFICE (V2O). A system for companies and organisations, to use the power from the electric car fleet as they are connected. It allows him to make better use of his solar energy storage and thus absorb the peaks in his demand. There are also opportunities for the fleet manager of the organisation. He may generate revenues by trading the joint capital on the energy market.
  • VEHICLE TO GRID (V2G). A system in which charging station operators, power plants or energy companies use the virtual aggregated capacity of a large number of connected cars to help the network operator to keep the electrical systems in balance. While at the same time smart use of fluctuating power prices. Firstly by smart charging. Secondly as a balancing service. In the short term to be able to switch on capital if imbalance on the high-voltage grid is imminent.

Finally, the electric car can be of value to the grid operator by providing a energy stored for the relief of peaks and troughs in the local grid. Or use it for your home energy system with, for example a Solar PV Carport.

Wikipedia about Vehicle to Grid:

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) describes a system in which plug-in electric vehicles, such as electric cars (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) or hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), communicate with the power grid to sell demand response services by either returning electricity to the grid or by throttling their charging rate
